An Irregular Valentine’s Day

Yes, White Castle, the zoo and a zombie movie are all acceptable V-Day events

If you’re any bit romantic, you most likely celebrate Valentine’s Day every year on Feb. 14. Which, unfortunately for some, is approaching at rapid speeds. Cue the excessive flowers, romance, chocolate and every other typical tradition. This Hallmark holiday will either make your heart soar or just flat out depressed.

Regardless if you celebrate this holiday with a significant other or your closest single friends, the “date” portion of this holiday is usually a big deal.

For couples, immense pressure is put on men to sweep a girl off her feet with a romantic date.

For those of you who are single, Valentine’s Day usually consists of movie nights or Valentine’s Day parties -- all which include a lot of fake smiles and self-loathing. Quite honestly, it’s getting old.

This year try something unique and untraditional to make this holiday more enjoyable!

For Couples

Tired of the typical dinner and movie Valentine’s Day date? Mix it up a little and give blood with your significant other! Blood donations tend to be low in the winter, so this is a great way for you and your sweetie to give something right from the heart.

If you’re looking to go really out of the box, head to White Castle! For Valentine’s Day, White Castle’s typical dining room is transformed into a romantic sanctuary with tablecloths, candles, silverware and a maitre d’ to greet and seat customers.

With a waiter to take orders as well, the only difference White Castle has from a real restaurant is the prices.

Do something different this Valentine’s Day and head to the zoo! Going to the zoo in the winter time can be one of the best times to go. Not only will you have the whole place to yourselves, but the animals that thrive on colder weather, like polar bears and tigers, will be more active than if you were to go on a nice day.

Instead of heading out for a meal with your date, do something different like Laser Tagging! This Valentine’s Day at Lazer Kraze, you can purchase one laser tag mission and receive one for free! It’s the perfect way to stray from the typical romantic date and throw some competition into your holiday.

For Singles

What better way to spend Valentine’s Day than to celebrate your love for Ohio State? On Feb. 12 at the Fawcett Center, there will be a Brutus Valentine’s Day party.

Participate in activities, eat some food, take a photo with Brutus and then head over to the Schottenstein Center for the women’s basketball game!

If you’re trying to get away from the Valentine’s Day parties for singles, head over to the Franklin Conservatory with your friends! Not only do you get to look at beautiful flowers, but you get to sample wine and chocolate while you do it.

Want to forget that it’s Valentine’s Day? Try something different like geocaching. For those of you who are unfamiliar, geocaching is a treasure hunt involving a handheld GPS, where people publish the coordinates of their cache online and you seek it out. The thrill of the chase will make you forget all about this Valentine’s Day. Check out geocaching.com for some treasures hidden in Columbus!

Take your frustrations out on Cupid this year and attend the 2012 Kill Cupid Party! This is a great way to give back on Valentine’s Day by either donating $5 or five canned food items to the Mid Ohio Food Bank.

By doing this you can participate in a flip cup tournament, Nutz N Bolts, raffles and much more! Included will be music, food, free shots and prizes! This year the benefit will be held at Flannagan’s in Dublin.

The Thing To Do This V-Day

Doesn’t everyone like to watch romantic movies on Valentine’s Day? Well this is an option to see a romantic comedy. With zombies. On Feb. 14, Gateway Film Center will be having their second annual Valentine’s Day screening of “Shaun of the Dead.” Whether you’re with your friends or a significant other, this fun alternative to the typical Valentine’s Day activities is not something you’ll want to miss.

Other than the movie itself, you’ll get to enjoy trivia, prizes, drink specials and an after-party in the Martini Shot Lounge for just $6!

For the girls who missed Cupid’s arrow, don’t worry. There are some Valentine’s Day traditions that could work in your favor.

Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.

So ladies, keep your eyes to the sky this Valentine’s Day!
