OPINION: Bromance
What straight men can learn from their gay counterparts about online dating

The New Year is upon us — and despite my best advice to myself, I've decided to venture into the social proclivity of online dating once more.
I've never been a fan of online dating personally. There are simply too many factors you can't figure out about a person unless you meet them face-to-face. But then again, some of the stories you get from talking to people online and finding out the vast differences in their personality when you do actually get to meet them are too priceless to pass up.
So there I was mindlessly plugging in data, height, weight, penis size — you know ... the basics. It was at that moment I began to think about how many ways there were for gay men to meet online.
I suddenly wondered if the same were accessible for straight males. Everyone knows about OkCupid, Match and eHarmony, but what about when a guy wants more than a steady relationship with a woman?
Ladies and Gentleman, or just the gentlemen, I have found your answer. The answer … is “Bromance.”
The gay male community in the 21st century is no stranger to the technological advantages of fast meet-ups, hookups, dating and anything else that can be accomplished with a few finger swipes and taps on a smartphone.
Grindr, one of the leaders in the use-‘em-and-lose-em tech front is a free app that allows you to create a profile and, using GPS satellites, triangulates your position as well as any other gay male within a designated radius, thus expediting travels worries when looking for that quick hookup, coffee date or more.
The gap was widening for our straight brethren, and they had no way to catch up.
Well fear no more lonely “bro.”
To specifically target a heterosexual male audience, a team of developers has tackled just that idea. The app? “Bromance,” an easy, free to download, and quick to use mobile app designed to help motivate bored bros to get together and “chillax.”
Sitting around the house with no one to hang out with? Well, now you can pull out your smartphone and with a few taps of your finger, connect with other bored, like-minded and -aged individuals suffering the same lethargic attitudes as yourself.
Perhaps you'll go pound some brewskies at the local sports bar, maybe even go see the latest intellectually numbing Adam Sandler movie and praise it as Oscar worthy. Regardless of your reasons and whether you'll become best friends or secret bedroom buddies.
I’ve always made the case that until recently much of the heterosexual world so heavily ostracized the gay community that encounters, whether they were sexual or not, took place in secret.
This back alley proclivity ushered in apps such as Grindr and Scruff. Now, however, more than ever, these apps are being utilized for meeting people in the day-to-day as our lives are so hurried and attitudes toward the GLBTQIA community have changed significantly. But, again, for one of the first times, if the gays can do it, why can't the straights?
This new app provides our “bro” brethren the same opportunities to enjoy back alley encounters or harmless coffee dates just like the rest us. Welcome to the club of social misfits and online trolls. You'll get your card in the mail in about seven to 10 business days. It's kind of like a Speedy rewards card, except you don't get anything but disappointment.
