MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The men’s volleyball team won three home matches this week. The no. 10 Buckeyes defeated three different opponents. First up was Sacred Heart with the Buckeyes winning a shutout, 3-0. Senior Shawn Sangrey led the match with 12 kills. Next up was George Mason, a closer match but the Buckeyes still winning 3-2. Sangrey again led the way with 20 kills. Finally, the team beat St. Francis 3-1 for their perfect week. Sangrey led the team with 16 kills and passed 1,000 kills for his career. Next up is the Ken and Dave Dunlap Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Columbus, featuring matches against Stanford, Penn State, and Pacific.

MEN’S TENNIS

The third-ranked men’s tennis team started the official season off this week with a 3-0 record. A Wednesday, Jan. 18 meet saw the Buckeyes beat Butler 7-0, then Xavier 7-0. They finished off the week with a 6-1 defeat of no. 16 Mississippi State on Sunday. The three home victories continued their dominance in Columbus under head coach Ty Tucker. No opponent has won in Columbus in 131 tries, or since the 2002-2003 season. Tucker also is undefeated on opening day with a 25-0 record. This year’s team will likely be carried by Blaz Rola who is ranked eighth in the nation in singles. Ohio State hosts Toledo on Sunday at home.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The women’s tennis team recovered from the previous week’s loss to South Florida by winning both matches in their double-header on Saturday, Jan. 21. The lady Buckeyes, ranked no. 55, also swept the points in both matches. First up was West Virginia, where Ohio State won every singles match and lost just one doubles match. Second was Dayton, where Ohio State won all matches in doubles and singles. In nine total matches, the team gave up a total of nine games. Next up in competition is the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Tallahassee, Fla. on Saturday and Sunday. The Buckeyes will face Florida State first, then either Texas A&M or Mississippi.

WRESTLING

In a notable conference upset, the no. 7 Ohio State wrestling team defeated the no. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday, Jan. 20 in Columbus at St. John Arena in front of a crowd of nearly 5,700. The Hawkeyes had previously dominated the Buckeyes, not losing since 1966 or 46 seasons ago. The team lost the opening 125 lb. match but rallied to win the next five matches. A crucial moment in that series was when freshman Buckeyes Logan Steiber, ranked no. 4 in the nation in the 130 lb. class, scored three points towards the victory. After the rally, the Buckeyes held a 15-3 lead and cruised to a 21-9 final score. The next match is against another top-five opponent. No. 3 Penn State will host Ohio State on Sunday, Jan. 29.
