The Golden Globes: Fairly tame, with a few major surprises
By Annie Porembski
Published January 18, 2012This past weekend’s Golden Globes had a tame host (in Ricky Gervais), some major surprises and gorgeous couture.
Let’s talk about Gervais first. The three-time host was in good behavior this weekend. He didn’t take many jabs at the audience, except for Madonna, saying, “She's always vogue. She's a material girl. And she's just like a virgin!" Madonna came back with, "If I'm still just like a virgin, Ricky, then why don't you come over here and do something about it? I haven't kissed a girl in a few years — on TV."
The best comment of the night was Gervais comparing the Globes to other award shows. “The Golden Globes are to the Oscars, what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton.”
He was almost upstaged by George Clooney, who poked fun at Brad Pitt’s knee injury. Clooney wobbled on stage using a cane and told the audience, "I have to give it back to him or he can't make it to the bar otherwise."
The Surprises:
First was Matt Leblanc winning Best Actor in a Series for “Episodes.” Well folks, Leblanc has finally left Joey’s shadow.
Meryl Streep’s needed some soap in her mouth. Streep won Best Actress in a Motion Picture for “The Iron Lady,” and probably had as many bleeps in her speech as Gervais in the entire show. She didn’t remember to bring something important on her way up to the stage, “Oh, Sh*t! I forgot my glasses.” Perez Hilton tweeted, “On a scale of 1 to 10, Meryl is about an 8 drunk tonight! She usually gets VERY sauced at the Globes — and I love it!!”
Surprising wins were Kelsey Grammer (BOO!), who won Best Actor for “Boss.” Laura Dern won Best Actress for HBO’s “Enlightened.”
There were deserving wins for “Modern Family” for Best TV Series, Comedy or Musical, Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture: Octavia Spencer, “The Help” and Michelle Williams for Best Actress in a Motion Picture for “My Week With Marilyn.”
The Fashion:
My favorite of the night: Claire Danes. She might not be the standout winner to the fashion experts, but I thought the black and white J.Mendel looked amazing, especially from the back.
Other standout dresses were Reese Witherspoon in a red-hot, body hugging Zac Posen number. The sweetheart cut and her perfect blonde tousled waves were a favorite of the night.
Jessica Alba in Gucci. The gorgeous lavender strapless gown looked fantastic Alba, who recently had her second child in August. I also loved the sparkling details.
Misses were Sarah Michelle Gellar in a denim-looking Monique Lhuiller gown and Lea Michelle getting ready for her triple axle in Marchesa.
I love award season! Next comes Oscar Nominations on Tuesday and the SAG Awards will be on Sunday, Jan. 29.
