Students react to Meyer hire

By the time the rumor mill stopped swirling and the home-run hire of new head football coach Urban Meyer became official Monday, the Ohio State student base was more than aware and mostly satisfied.
“I think hiring Urban (Meyer) is a good thing,” said senior Kelly Angle. “I like Fickell, but I think we need someone strong to come in there and lead the program.”
Nate A., a junior studying hospitality management, also approved.
“He brings a whole new perspective and a whole new ballgame – and it’s nice that he’s from Ohio. He has a different way of approaching the game with focus on coaching and recruits. He has a lot to offer.”
Steve S., a freshman studying graphic design, was excited to hear recruiting rumors already surfacing.
“I think we have one new recruit already that said he wants to come here just to play for Meyer,” he said. “A wide receiver from Florida, I think.”
Robert Ballinger, a sophomore studying political science, also respects Meyer’s recruiting abilities. He said he has a stronghold on Ohio with his ties here, and to the southern talent with his time spent in Florida.
“We need those recruits,” Ballinger said. “It couldn’t be a more perfect hire for us at this time.”
While there wasn’t much disappointment among the students in reaction to hiring a coach with two national titles and over 100 wins in 10 ten seasons, some students were careful about immediate rejoice, such as senior Derek Budde.
“It’s definitely a good hire, of course – he’s the best available coach,” he said. “But, I see people on Facebook praising (Meyer) like the savior has come. I’d just like to wait and see before I call him great for Ohio State. And I still have a little resentment from 2006.”
