What is DAYGLOW?

By Peter Fancher

Published May 11, 2011

It is completely dark in the concert hall, except for the brilliant lights coming from the stage. The crowd is roaring in excitement, the music is coming to an epic crescendo, there are choreographed performers, wearing captivating neon ensembles, and moving in perfect unison with the music. On the giant projection screens, there is a countdown to the moment that every person in the audience has been waiting for, and that is to be covered in an all-consuming blast of confetti and paint.

This is a mere peek into the world of a DAYGLOW event.

“DAYGLOW is a fully scripted show with a high level of production that will include theater, art, choreographed performers and, of course, paint,” said Sebastian Solano, president and co-founder of DAYGLOW.

DAYGLOW, which is known as “The World’s Largest Paint Party,” started in 2006 on college campuses in Florida. Solano said he and his friends have been throwing parties since they were in high school, and they continued through their college years.

When throwing parties became a full-time thing for them, Solano and his friends dropped out of college to pursue their calling. They started out throwing parties on Florida’s campuses, but Solano and his group of friends have vastly expanded the idea to be what it is now: a “massive live electronic music concert with paint guns,” not to mention the theater, art and choreographed performers they have incorporated into the show.

Since its start in Florida, this unique show has been experienced by audiences in many cities, both nationally, and internationally. DAYGLOW had a featured stage at Ultra Music Festival in Miami in 2009 and 2010. This show has also been seen in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Diego, Cancun, Melbourne and London.

When the event was held in Orlando at the UCF Arena it set a new record for the United States with over 5,500 fans in attendance, not to mention it ended up being a sold out event. The first show of their International Tour, which was in Cancun 2010, was a sold out show, and had an audience of over 4,300.

Del, who is a multiple event attendee, has definitely seen the rise in DAYGLOW’s popularity.

“It is booming in Miami and L.A. and it is now starting to come to Columbus. It is becoming more and more popular, and more people are starting to go to these events,” Del said.

Apparently the craze to attend these parties is continuing to rise, even with people who are not even interested in electronic music.

“We brought one person with us last year, and she didn’t like electronic music. This year she was like, ‘I’m going to go. I’m going to request that day off and I’m going to go,’” said Del with great excitement.

He said if you’re thinking about attending a show, “You won’t regret it. I have been trying to ask all my friends. I tell them I know you don’t like electronic music, but you won’t regret it. It is one of the best parties you could go to. You gotta try it. They’re always in doubt like, ‘oh it’s $33,’ but it is the best $33 you’ll ever spend.”

If you are intrigued at this point and would love to check it out, the next stop on the DAYGLOW tour is our very own Columbus. The show will be this Friday, May 13 at Veteran’s Memorial.
