In Black And White in the flesh

By Ben Peyton

There is something extra special about an album from a band who did all the work themselves – a labor of love that’s going to be like something you have never heard before. In Black And White’s upcoming album, “Say We Are Not Brothers,” is a terrific collection of post-punk rock songs that the band wrote, recorded and produced all by itself – a D.I.Y aesthetic which is part of what makes the members so interesting.

In Black And White to perform Sunday, Jan. 7 at Bernies Distillery.

David Rich, drummer for In Black And White, explained that they enjoyed recording and releasing the album on their own because it granted the band a certain level of freedom. “We are definitely into doing it ourselves and keeping it real ... We have no problems doing it ourselves because we are into that.”

The Jan. 7 show will be In Black And White’s first time playing in Columbus and if their EP is an indicator of what their live show is like, then expect a night of high-energy music. “We like to have a lot of energy live. We like to be loud and maybe have some urgency with our music,” Rich said. “You can never capture that on a record and when you are playing live and loud and you are all playing together it sounds better than the recording.”

The influences are put forward for all to hear on their most recent EP, but the reason it works is that you are unable to put your finger on where you think you have heard them before. And as Rich explained, that’s how they like it. “We come from very different musical backgrounds, so the mix that we come up with is slightly different then some bands that are out there.”

Even though the album sounds like Fugazi or At The Drive In on certain parts, what is most impressive is that they can sound like those two seminal bands but at the same time never lose their original sound.

In Black And White will be performing at Bernie’s Distillery on Sunday, Jan. 7. The Heartland and The Slide Machine support.
