With its slender white body and glowing amber tip, the electronic cigarette can easily pass for a regular cigarette. It even releases what looks like remnants of white smoke. Don’t be fooled, because what you see is not a real cigarette, it is an electronic cigarette.

According to a published report, when using an electronic cigarette, the smoker is not actually smoking. The electronic cigarettes are battery powered and they vaporize nicotine, so you are actually inhaling the nicotine vapor. You’re getting the nicotine hit, but without the toxic smoke and contents of the cigarette and tar.

In a recent interview on “The Early Show”, Dr. Jonathan Whiteson from New York University’s Cardiac and Pulmonary Wellness and Rehabilitation Program, said there is no proof these cigarettes are safe. The cigarettes are made in China, are unregulated and have not been approved by the FDA. It is unknown how much nicotine is actually in the cigarette and we are unaware of the contents within the vapor. One may ask: Could the electronic cigarette be worse for you than cigarettes?

According to Whiteson, there is a good chance it could be worse than regular cigarettes. Manufacturers seem to think it is a safer bet, but there has been no analysis done of the vapor.

Johnny Watts, who is a current electronic cigarette user, said he started using the e-cigarette after a friend introduced him to the device. “A friend of mine was telling me about it and I decided to try it out,” he said. “I was a regular cigarette smoker before I started using the e-cigarette, so instead of smoking regular cigarettes, I use the e-cigarette everyday. I have been using the e-cigarette for three months now and I will never go back to smoking regular cigarettes if I don’t have to.”

According to a national study, fewer college students (one in five) are smoking. The tobacco industry plays a huge role in fluctuating rates of college student smoking. Roughly 20 percent of today’s college students who smoke are regular smokers. According to a published report, one study found that students at 109 of 119 schools surveyed reported seeing tobacco promotions in an on-campus event. Tobacco industry documents revealed campaigns to target young adults during transitional life stages, such as moving from high school to college or work. Tobacco companies believe those life stages are a perfect time to develop new behaviors such as smoking. In an attempt to utilize this vulnerability, tobacco companies sponsor promotions in bars and nightclubs in an attempt to make young adults view smoking as a social norm. That may move them from experimenting with cigarettes to becoming pack-a-day smokers.

According to the American Lung Association, each year 440,000 people die in the U.S. from tobacco use. Nearly one of every five deaths is related to smoking. Cigarettes kill more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide and illegal drugs combined. At least 30 percent of all cancer deaths including cancers of the lung, larynx (voice box), oral cavity, pharynx (throat) and esophagus are attributed to smoking cigarettes. It is a contributing cause in the development of cancers of the bladder, pancreas, liver, uterine cervix, kidney, stomach, colon and rectum, and some leukemia. Secondhand smoke causes almost 50,000 deaths in adult nonsmokers in the United States each year, including approximately 3,400 from lung cancer and 22,700-69,600 from heart disease.

According to smokingeverywhere.com, the electronic cigarette is driven by a micro-electronic technology. The actual cigarette body is made up of three parts: a nicotine cartridge, an atomization chamber and a smart chip with a lithium battery. The atomization chamber device creates a vapor-like smoke when puffed on, just like a real cigarette. This vapor is a result of the nicotine found in the cartridge, heated up by the atomizer device and creating vapor smoke, but without any smell of smoking real tobacco. This is when the smoker gets the nicotine hit and the smoke-likeillusion, but without having to smoke a real cigarette.

The electronic cigarette is eco-friendly, non-flammable and can be smoked anywhere- yes, it can be smoked anywhere. The electronic cigarette can be smoked in restaurants, bars, in the airport and it can even be smoked while you are sitting in class.

The electronic cigarette has many perks and smoking real cigarettes is something that is unhealthy for someone’s body. So before you take your chances with the electronic cigarette, talk to your doctor and get started with a program that helps smokers kick the nasty habit.

  2. Are people THAT hooked on cigs that we have to be doing a legal route in class?! That’s pretty bad when you can’t wait until a break or class lets out.

  3. The Greatest Generation smoked cigarettes in classrooms and office buildings; old-school Tour De France cyclists would have a cigarette before (and likely after) a large hill...I saw something on the news last night where a Gen X-er had built a bong and placed his cat inside while he smoked. But we aren’t smoking cigarettes, not as much. Electronic cigarettes may be Chinese mind-control devices, you know.

  4. Hang on - no analysis? What about that research done by New Zealand doctor, Dr. Murray Laugesen, which said that electronic cigarettes are very safe compared to electronic cigarettes and also safe in absolute terms?

  5. the early show was biased and based on a negative overall opinion of anything that even looked like a cigarette.
no facts, no truth,,just a negative we dont know but we think there bad for no reason at all.

  6. I would be annoyed if someone was smoking a cigarette next to me in class (with "fake" smoke or the real stuff) and absolutely pissed if I was the teacher. Just as annoying as eating candy or texting through class.

  7. I have been smoking an electronic cigarette for a little over a month. I did quite a bit of research before I bought into the whole fad. Two factys I was sure of is that they are FDA approved and that there is no second hand smoke. You can literally blow it in someones face and there is no odor at all. Theonly thing that I have noticed is that there is coconut oil in the vapor and it leaves a sweet taste on the lips.
Also for those of you that think it is an excuse so that we smokers can smoke anywhere, you’re wrong. It helps in a healthier way to try and kick the habit. Dont judge someone for trying to better themselves... for that matter dont judge anyone at all for anything... it’s not your place.

  8. This has to be one of the greatest inventions ever!
Since smoking a pack of tobacco cigs a day I still have the half pack left form two weeks ago my new e-cig arrived. I started with the high dose cartridges and am now down using the light. In the evening I pop in a 0mg cartridge and just enjoy the great flavor. Real tobacco cigarettes tast like horse pucky compare to all the great e-smoke flavors so I’m not encouraged to go back to tobacco. And who’s the government to say I can’t enjoy a fine vapor flavor while they enjoy a fat cigar. Like someone mentioned above. The Greatest Generation Smoked. So what if someone enjoys a small vice. Not saying we should be vaporing everywhere or in class or work. Have some common sense and manners people. Honestly this has helped me and several other people I know stop cigarettes and I feel 100 times better and not short of breath anymore . . There’s your test.

    Bruce | 2009-03-26 - 08:05:41 PM (CDT)
  9. Bruce is completely right.

This is a nice little invention that helps a lot, i’ve been smoking it for about a week and all ready i dont feel the lack of breath, need to yawn or wheeze or anything i had while smoking traditional cigarettes.

And this is isn’t something a respective person would ever pull out and smoke blatantly to upset or annoy people, we’re abiding by the law.

  10. Nicotine is the most addictive drug on the planet, so if these can help us stop smoking real cigarettes, YAY! Non-smokers: Do Not Judge Us Smokers who are fighting to quit! It is a true test of will, a battle waged one minute at a time and we need all the assistance possible to win.

  11. But are they more expensive? Would you smoke 20 e-cigarettes a day?

    furlonium | 2009-04-27 - 07:38:34 PM (CDT)
  12. one e-cigarette cartridge is apparently equal to 20 regular cigarettes, and you can purchase 5 cartrages for 10 dollars (plus at www.smoking-everywhere.com they’re having a sale on the 2.0 cartrages buy one pack get one pack free)
I haven’t tried the e-cig yet, just ordered it in the mail today

  13. Let’s say something in spanish...
Esta chingon!!... pero tengan cuidado por que pueden fumar más nicotina de la cuenta... tomen en cuenta que son 10 bocanadas en promedio por cigarro..
    Saludos!!..

  15. The electronic cigarettes I bought from BarCigarettes.com, I could smoke in all the local bars I have been to in Columbus.

    Diesel | 2009-05-22 - 06:04:28 AM (CDT)
  16. You can get them here at http://www.BarCigarettes.com. They offer 20% off if you put in the code REORDER!

    Diesel | 2009-05-22 - 06:05:35 AM (CDT)
  17. What Guillermo said. My only real reservation is that these cigarettes do not start and end. So unless you watch out you could end up consuming more nicotine than you would if you smoked regular cigarettes and counted them / didn’t chain smoke.

    Leslie | 2009-06-14 - 07:47:04 PM (CDT)
  18. exactly, "smoking" is bad for you. These little beauties don’t have any of the carcinogens or rat poison, yes I said rat poison, that you smoke when you light up any cigarette. this is just a vapor hit of nicotene. Very similar to a patch, but really helps with the whole hand to mouth facet of cigarette addiction...Hey! I bet they could claim that you wouldn’t gain weight when you quit using these....just keep on going with the 0mg nicotene cartridges...(Ecigs, i’ll be expecting a call and a check for $1,000,000.00)

  19. I just started using the e-cig. I was amazed at how it satisfied all my smoking fixes. I can have it when I drive...but no ashes, and yuck smell...I can actually feel the "smoke" and release of stress...but no cough! i can come back from a smoke break, and not have to worry about my clothes smelling. So far....so good

  20. This feels like everyone talking here is just advertising

    Clay | 2009-09-17 - 04:26:59 PM (CDT)
  21. Everyone I know who smokes electronic cigarettes, boasts about them like they’re advertising, because they really are great...this is actually a product that is good in every single way...I’m 21 female go to college, I love my electronic cigarette so much, anxiety, depression, just overall groggy feeling you get after smoking a real ciagrette is GONE with e-ciggs. And mine was not made in china, it was handmade in America. Who wants to bet this article was paid for by a cigarette company? Especially since there HAS been research done and it IS FDA approved. And again, go to an e-cigarette forum, everyone sounds like they are advertising...For smokers, e-cigarettes can literally change your life for the better and people are just really excited about it.

    Joanna | 2009-10-28 - 08:38:32 PM (CDT)
  22. I for one can be honest, no more burned holes in clothes, carpet. no smelly cars and homes, and lets not forget all the bitching that went along with smoking, I love my E-cigarette and so does my family and hopefully in time I can wean myself away for any vice. But for now friends I must have an E-cigarette right here at my desk at home and not at school or work for gods sake. have a good day.

    evergreenplace | 2009-11-11 - 03:21:14 PM (CDT)
  23. The only problem with this is that if e-cigarettes are allowed in class, than potentially the door is opened for any drug use in public.

    K | 2010-02-15 - 12:29:04 AM (CDT)
  24. How can you say that this will open the door for drug use in public? Do you think people will start making crack pipes that look like this? I think that’s rediculous. People already smoke marijuana in public by rolling joints that look like hand rolled cigarettes.
