Hot trends for Spring 2008

As we all know, the fashion sections of our local department stores are inspired by runway trends. The most popular designers inspire new looks each season, and although their pieces may cost a pretty penny, don’t convince yourself that you can’t afford to wear the hottest new styles. No one wants to spend a fortune on something that may be considered unfashionable in a few months, anyway. The key is to look for “runway dupes” at your local department stores. It’s all in the details, so it doesn’t hurt to bring a picture of the real thing with you when you shop for your cheaper knockoff. If you pair your dupe with the right accessories and carry it off with confidence and style, no one will ever know it isn’t the real thing.

Springs’s key pieces:

The trench coat or belted safari jacket: Beiges or khakis are the safest colors. The safari jacket may go out of style in a few seasons, but the trench coat will always be a classic. Invest in the best trench coat you can afford. My great-grandmother’s London Fog still looks brand new and stylish.

Wide-legged pants: White and navy blue are good color choices for the popular nautical trend this season. Also called palazzo pants, these have been chic for many generations when worn in a neutral color and paired with a sleek top. Remember to balance your body. If you’re wearing something wide on the bottom, your top should be close-fitting.

Bangle bracelets: Metal, wood and plastic (in a throwback to retro costume jewelry) are all popular choices.

Cropped vests/jackets: These look super cute when worn over a blousy top or billowy dress. Make sure they fit well and cinch in at your waist so the form of your body isn’t lost in the outfit.

Belted dresses: Long, prairie dresses or Indian caftans look beautiful with a belt either at the bust or the natural waist. Scarves will work in place of a regular belt. Feel free to be creative.

Spring’s key prints:

Florals

Ethnic/tribal prints

Nautical stripes/stars

Bold and bright batik or paisley prints
