Four of a Kind
Van Halen
Wednesday @ Schottenstein Center
Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Alex Van Halen, and Wolfgang Van Halen are together for the first time in 22 years. Formed in Los Angeles in 1974, the band has always been known for their electrifying live shows. From the moment they released their self-titled 1978 debut album, Van Halen shook the foundations of rock, thanks largely to Roth’s peerless showmanship, Eddie Van Halen’s revolutionary guitar virtuosity and their songwriting abilities. Their music has changed rock and roll forever.
Drive-By Truckers
Wednesday @ Newport Music Hall
The Drive-By Truckers are a unique little rock band from the South for a variety of reasons. Probably the most obvious difference in their sound is the use of a “three axe attack,” that is, having three guitarists instead of the standard two. Earlier this year the band released their 8th album, “Brighter Than Creation’s Dark,” which featured a return to their country roots that hadn’t been heard prominently on an album in almost 10 years. Opening for the Southern rockers will be the Dexateens.
Soulja Boy
Saturday @ Newport Music Hall
Crank that music and Superman that ho as Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em (or just Soulja Boy to most people) takes the stage at the Newport Music Hall for a free concert sponsored by OUAB. The rapper has found quite the following since his humble beginnings from being a virtual unknown, posting his songs on YouTube and MySpace without any major record label support. M.I.A. — another artist who first found her audience largely through fans on the internet — will open the show. Hopefully you’ve already got your ticket for this show, though: It’s sold out.
Reverend Horton Heat
Sunday @ Newport Music Hall
Jim “Reverend Horton Heath” will return to Columbus with his psychobilly band from Texas. The Reverend, both the man and the band, toured extensively through the mid ‘90s and have gained somewhat of a cult following for those familiar with their work. Though the band hasn’t put out an album with new music since 2005’s “We Three Kings” Christmas album, the band continues to reward fans by touring extensively. The colorfully named Nashville Pussy and Backyard Tire Fire will open.
