Four of a Kind

Untitled Document Dream Theater

Friday @ THE LC

Dream Theater has been around just about as long as most current college students have been alive. John Myung, John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy probably didn’t realize they would be creating a whole new genre of music (progressive metal) when they formed their band while at the Berklee College of Music in 1985, but the style they pioneered continues to endure today. The band’s most recent effort, “Systematic Chaos,” was released just shy of a year ago to rave reviews, and the band continues to tour heavily to promote their fusion of metal and progressive rock and roll.

Flight of the Conchords

Friday @ Schottenstein Center

If you’re not already familiar with the quirky lyrics and soothing folk guitar of the Flight of the Conchords, then consider yourself in for a treat. Brent McKenzie and Jermaine Clement proudly proclaim themselves as “New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo.” Though the two have toured extensively and built up an admirable fan base in the process, most will be familiar with the group from their HBO show of the same name. Students are also able to pick up free tickets (1 per student) to this concert by showing their BuckID at the Ohio Union Information Desk while supplies last.

Rock on the Range

Friday and Saturday @ Crew Stadium

Last year some 40,000 rock fans from all over the Midwest converged on Crew Stadium to hear some hard rock music…and organizers were so happy with the sold-out show they’ve decided to do it again this year. Whereas last year’s concert was one day only, the 2008 edition will run for two days, giving Stone Temple Pilots, Kid Rock, and 3 Doors Down (who all have top billing) plenty of time to play a full set. “New rock” groups such as Shinedown, Seether, Papa Roach, Flyleaf, and Finger Eleven will fill out the rest of the schedule, along with many others.

Panic at the Disco

Saturday @ THE LC

They took an almost three year break to do it, but Panic at the Disco is back with a follow-up to their 2005 debut album, “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out,” and if most of the major reviews are anything to believe, the band has certainly avoided the death kiss of the sophomore curse. Part of the wait behind “Pretty. Odd.” was that the band started writing the album at the beginning of 2007, but then decided to scrap it in July and start from scratch. This tour will be the last opportunity to catch the band for a bit, as they will embark on a world tour across Asia, Australia, and New Zealand in August.
