Lovely summer layers

[Comment Below]

By Alexandria O.

Dear Alexandria O,
I love the “layered” look, but I’m not sure how to make it work in the summertime. Do you have any advice?

Layering clothes in the summer is easier than you might think, but there are a few guidelines to follow. When we layer our clothes in the fall and winter, we do so primarily for warmth, but in the summertime our goal is to add color and interest to an outfit without overheating ourselves. Stay away from sweater-like materials and long sleeves unless it really is chilly outside. Instead, focus on layering tanks, camisoles, and t-shirts.

Camisoles are often layered together, or underneath tanks or t-shirts. It is sometimes trendy to wear the camisole on top of the t-shirt, but that fashion comes and goes. I would advise against wearing more than two layers unless the third layer is a cropped jacket or bolero. Too many layers will add unnecessary and unwanted bulk to your figure. Color coordination is the key when it comes to making your layered tops look chic. Try new color combinations that are fresh and lively. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Some of my favorites are:

  • turquoise and bright green
  • yellow and pink
  • red and orange
  • teal and brown
  • purple and green
  • orange and dark blue
  • white and bronze

Shrugs, boleros, or cropped jackets make a lovely addition to your layering wardrobe, and are also functional and fashionable for multiple seasons. They should fit well, especially when worn over looser tops, and they can be colorful on their own or neutral to accent colors layered underneath. If you buy a cropped jacket and plan to wear it in the fall as well as the summer, consider your color choice carefully. Bright colors are rarely fashionable for colder seasons, but neutrals or dark jewel tones are always appropriate. Layering isn’t just for the top half of the body, either. The true fashionista will wear cropped tights or leggings under shorts, sundresses, and mini-skirts. The tights should always be opaque (no one wants a glimpse of your rear when you bend over) and if the leggings are cropped, they should ideally end just below your knee.

And one last thing: never underestimate the power of colorful accessories with any outfit. Accessories are often a cheaper and more versatile way to try new colors without having to purchase an entire new wardrobe. Play with necklaces, scarves, shoes, belts, and bags. Most importantly, have fun!
