Iowa must be destroyed

Before November the 7th, the Buckeyes were looking forward to ruining the then-unbeaten Hawkeyes' pie-in-the-sky hopes of a national championship season. The entire nation would watch what happened when a team that refused to lose played the best team on their schedule in a place they hadn't won since the invention of the Internet. Most Buckeye fans know not to fear Iowa no matter how shiny their record or how lofty their ranking. The game would have been the perfect example of the dominion Ohio State has over the Big Ten this decade and the futility of resistance no matter how plucky the team or how admirable their goals.

The beatability of the Hawkeyes that has been apparent all year unfortunately cost Iowa the chance to enter the Shoe undefeated. Ricky Stanzi was always two parts clutch to one part liability, and without him the Hawkeyes went down in fiery flames. When combined with the utter sock bath OSU gave Penn State last weekend, Iowa is now a huge underdog. Without their national championship hopes and their starting quarterback, Iowa now limps into Ohio Stadium not the proud rebels looking to crash the BCS, but a desperate and disappointed band clinging to a distant Rose Bowl bid.

This Saturday is clearly a must win. In order to salvage a season thought to be a semi-rebuilding year, we have to win the Big Ten again and head out to the Rose Bowl for our 5th straight BCS appearance. I would rather win by 1 point than risk losing at all to Iowa. If you are an Ohio State player or on the OSU coaching staff, I don't think I need to tell you that winning is really all the fans want. Win.

Iowa, despite their recent black eye and pedestrian team, are still very dangerous. While recently defeated, they still have plenty to gain by embarrassing the Buckeyes on their own field. Intangibles are more often than not fluff for sports columnists. Without Stanzi, however, the Hawkeyes are outmanned at nearly every position. "Motivation" and "wanting it more" are really all Iowa has left.

That's why we must destroy them. We must remind them that they failed in their glorious campaign. They must remember that they are second-class in their own conference, and an afterthought in the nation's conscious. If they gain a first down, we have to sack whatever fly-over state yahoo they have back there. If they score a field goal, we score a touchdown on the following series. If they score a touchdown, well, they better not score a touchdown. For everyone's sake.

Ohio State is coming off the biggest win since the students celebrated with orgiastic enthusiasm on the craterous "natural" field after beating number two Michigan in 2006. We followed that win up with a turd so complete and awful that the entire conference's reputation was cast into perdition and the Buckeye brand remains indelibly sullied. The Big Ten's rep is (relatively) safe in this contest, but the stakes are nearly as high for the Buckeyes. Win, and Pasadena is all but guaranteed. A loss wouldn't knock the Buckeyes out of contention for a Big Ten Title. Ohio State would only have to win one more against Michigan to win their 5th Big Ten title. A loss to Minnesota for Iowa - not totally out of the question - would not allow the Buckeyes to back into the Rose Bowl (Iowa would have the head-to-head) for the first time since 1997 but it would get another shared Big Ten title.

With a win, however, Ohio State stems the tide of criticism started by the 2007 BCS title game, and starts a "Return of Tressel" meme. Knocking out conference heavies has never been a huge problem for Ohio State under the Vest. Getting back to being undisputed king of the Big Ten is a start towards becoming emperor of the world, which is really the only way Tressel can make Ohio State fans happy. We must kill Iowa dead. Hawkeye fans will not be able to complain about the officiating. They will not be able to blame the back up quarterback. They will have no room to complain about Kirk Fererntz's coaching. The team will not say they were unprepared, or didn't try hard enough. In whatever primitive newspaper they have in Iowa City, opinion columnists will print eight word pieces on the loss. "Ohio State was just better like always. Shit." Talk radio shows in the Corn State will simply be hour-long sighs interspersed with half-hearted previews of the Golden Gophers. The message boards will be completely blank for 48 hours following the beat down. To these ends we must aspire.

    Your Rose Bowl scenario is a bit misleading. You say if Iowa wins this weekend, OSU can still get a piece of the Big Ten Title. The only way that can happen is if Iowa loses next week to Minny. So let me get this straight: Iowa goes into the ’Shoe, starts they’re RS Freshman at QB for the first time ever, beats the Buckeyes, then turns around and LOSES to Minny at home the next week??!?!??! You’re so worked up that it is as if you think it might be a real game, but that’s clearly impossible, as you make clear. I know that the only reason I’m going to the game is to experience the bonhomie and good cheer that is OSU. It’s not because Ferentz is at his best in the biggest games.   27. First of all, a short course in grammar is appropriate. The first one that jumps out at me is Iowa ARE, (should be Iowa IS). Secondly, the reason that the Big Ten is so looked down upon nationally is that Ohio State has done nothing in the BCS but embarrass the entire conference. As a Hawkeye alum, I can say that we’ve got a tremendous amount of confidence in this year’s team and look forward to their showing on Saturday.

    I fully expect Iowa to get kicked on Saturday, and I’m a huge Iowa fan. Ohio State clearly has a more talented team and with the injuries that Iowa has at this point, Ohio State has a really clear advantage.

    With that being said, The only chance for us to pull off a win to exploit your overrated number one recruited disappointment behind center. Although he’s capable of playing up to an average level at times, he’s overdue to create turnovers at the level of a modern-day Daunte Culpepper. If Iowa has a chance, it’ll be because of the guy that has "TP" tattooed on his arms.

    Keep your eye on Clayborn, and pray really, really hard that he didn’t read this article.
