Review: The Bigs

The Bigs: Almost as fun as the real thing.

If you like your baseball with plenty of home runs and highlight reel plays, then 2K Sports’ “The Bigs” (available on all major consoles) is the game for you.
What makes “The Bigs” so much better than other past arcade baseball titles is that this one is actually a blast to play. For every strike thrown by the pitcher to every ball taken by the hitter, it’ll increase the team’s turbo meter, which when used will boost up a player’s action. So, when batting with a player, the chance of making good contact with the ball increases by using some turbo.
Every time a successful hit is made or when getting the opposing team to strikeout, points are added to the Power Up meter. Once full and activated, you can have a batter on your team execute a monster home run or use it with your pitcher to throw some serious heat that’ll take away some of the opposition’s Power Up meter and put it into your side.
Playing through the Rookie Challenge mode is where the majority of your time will be spent. Here, you’ll create a rookie for your favorite team, play some matches and build up his attributes in order to become the World Series MVP. It’s fun, but won’t take long to complete.
The Home Run Derby, Home Run Pinball and online play round out the selection of modes available in “The Bigs,” yet the latter two are only available on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. Having a Season/Franchise mode would have been nice, but if 2K Sports does make a sequel, hopefully the fielding and base running controls will be improved too.
Visually, the game looks great, especially on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. Although every major league player has an exaggerated bulky look to him, the faces are spot-on from their real life counterparts. The music featured in here rocks, too, with tracks from bands like Killing Joke, Jane’s Addiction and Stone Temple Pilots.
As its first arcade baseball game, 2K Sports did a fine job with “The Bigs.” While it could have had some more modes to play in, baseball fans should step up to the plate and give it a try.
This week’s new releases:
NASCAR 08 (X360, PS3, PS2)
Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks The 80’s (PS2)
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 (PS2)
